Courtland Sutton Pursues Contract Adjustment Amid Broncos’ Minicamp Attendance

Courtland Sutton attended the Broncos’ minicamp on Tuesday to avoid a $104,000 fine, differentiating his case from those of CeeDee Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk, and Amari Cooper. Despite his participation, Sutton is still seeking a contract adjustment.Currently, no immediate resolution is in sight for Sutton, as discussions with the team remain at a standstill over a month after the issue surfaced, according to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. Sutton’s four-year, $60 million contract, which extends through 2025, includes only $2 million of his $13 million base salary for 2024 guaranteed. The 6-foot-4 receiver, recovering from offseason ankle surgery, mainly observed during the Broncos’ initial minicamp practice, as reported by Mike Klis of 9News. Sutton, 28, briefly considered skipping the minicamp but decided to stay committed to the team, with hopes of earning a ring of fame induction in the future. Drafted in the second round, Sutton has shown potential despite the team’s ongoing quarterback challenges since Peyton Manning’s departure.Sutton is believed to be seeking a salary increase. While the Broncos previously accommodated Chris Harris with a pay raise, Harris had a more proven track record and was in the final year of his contract when granted the raise in 2019. Sutton, with only one 1,000-yard season and two years remaining on his deal, faces a more complex situation, especially since Sean Payton was not part of the organization when Sutton was extended in 2021.Despite trade interest, the Broncos have resisted trading Sutton, even as they traded Jerry Jeudy for fifth- and sixth-round picks. Sutton was valued with a second-round asking price last year, which was unlikely to be met, but his contract remains favorable compared to current wide receiver market standards. His $15 million average annual value now ranks 26th at the position, while Jeudy secured a more lucrative extension with more guaranteed money. As the offseason progresses, several wide receiver contracts are under scrutiny, with Sutton’s situation being a notable second-tier issue. The Broncos likely aim for Sutton to support first-round rookie Bo Nix, with training camp expected to be the next critical phase in resolving this standoff.
