Breaking: For baseball at this time, Dylan Cease’s no-hitter was extraordinarily exceptional.
On Thursday, Dylan Cease, the starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres, created MLB history by pitching a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. But of the 324 no-nos ever documented, his was the only one. Cease is just the 18th pitcher in history to throw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and three or fewer walks on 114 pitches or more. Hall of Famers Roy Halladay, Dave Stewart, Randy Johnson, and Nolan Ryan (twice) are on that list. Over the past ten years, the number of no-hitters has more than doubled, rising from 14 in 2000–09 to 33 in 2010–19. Although Cease’s was the 15th since 2020, the details of how he pulled it off are mostly lost. Cease’s stat line appears inferior than the only other 2024 no-hitter, which was thrown by Houston Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco.
